Disinfection of Water

UV light is one of most popular methods of treating rain water prior to use or consumption.  Often the reason for using it is people have had illnesses because of poor water quality.  Subsequent tests on the water revealed the presence of bacteria/microorganisms which explains the ill health.

UV is somewhat unique as many people use it as their only method of water disinfection.  There are many other methods of disinfecting water with the majority requiring chemical dosing.  Consequently, UV has a number of advantages over other methods such as;

  • No chemical residues
  • No effect on taste
  • No dosing pump or chemicals required
  • Less maintenance
  • Less can go wrong
  • Over-dosing is not considered to be a problem

It should be noted that depending on the water and its use, other methods of disinfection should be considered and the benefits that they bring.  UV, for example, does not provide residual disinfection within the distribution system.

The reality is that most people use UV disinfection with rainwater tanks where in normal circumstances there is no water treatment process present.

The UV installation typically includes;

  • A power supply
  • A Pre-filter
  • UV lamp housing

An example of a recently installed UV system is seen below.

New Installation

Lamp Replacement

To ensure optimum performance of the unit the UV lamp needs to be replaced on a regular basis.  Typically, lamps are replaced annually as part of a maintenance program which also ensures that the unit is working and the internal glass is clean.  Biofilms on the glass can reduce the effectiveness of the UV lamp.

Filter Replacement

The filter needs to be replaced on a regular basis. It’s easy and not hard to replace and helps to ensure that the UV disinfection is maintained. A dirty filter can also cause a drop in water pressure and contribute to biofilm on the glass. Don’t neglect it and always have a spare filter ready to use.

Fit for purpose

We will help you decide what UV system you should use, where you can place it and how to maintain it.
